About the Network

 

The Illinois PBIS Network is the Positive Behavior Interventions & Supports component of the Illinois Statewide Technical Assistance Collaborative (ISTAC) - an Illinois State Board of Education funded initiative promoting effective practices to benefit all children.

 

The Illinois PBIS Network builds capacity of schools, families, and communities to promote social and academic success of all students, including those with emotional/behavioral and other disabilities.

New Federal Guidance on School Discipline and Discrimination
 

The U.S. Departments of Education and Justice recently released documents on the Supportive School Discipline Initiative, a collaborative effort rethinking school discipline to create safe, positive school climates. The Initiative is aimed at developing equitable schools and emphasizes prevention and positive approaches that keep students in school and engaged in learning. The clear message against zero tolerance policies is rooted not only in equity for students of color, who face disproportionate rates of exclusionary discipline, but also for students with disabilities who are typically at higher risk of receiving office referrals and out of school suspensions. The four-component guidance package and additional resources are available on the USDOE website.

School-wide Information System (SWIS)

If you had snow days in January, remember to modify the days per month in SWIS. After logging into your SWIS account, go to tools, and then school settings.  In the school settings menu, select school days listed on the left side. Edit the 2013-2014 school year by clicking on the pencil icon and then modify the number of days in January based on the snow days your school was closed due to weather. If your school needs to make those days up at the end of the year, remember to add those days where necessary. Please emaileval@pbisillinois.org with questions.

 

Implementation Inventory 

The Implementation Inventory webinars are complete. In March, all schools will have the opportunity to complete the Implementation Inventory online. Overview webinars will be posted on the Illinois PBIS Network website to assist with completing the tool. More information about the Implementation Inventory can be found here. Look for more updates in the March FPN.

 

In previous years when schools completed the Illinois PoI (Phases of Implementation), they also completed other fidelity measures, such as the BoQ, BAT, TIC, etc. This year, school teams should still complete the fidelity measures they have used in the past and enter their results in PBIS Assessments to compare their progress from last year.  Being able to compare implementation from year to year assists in sustaining PBIS. 

  

Generating a Triangle Report

The Triangle Data Report displays the multi-tiered behavioral outcome data for your school. This report gives the breakdown of ODRs at three levels: students receiving 0-1 ODRs, 2-5 ODRs, and 6 or more ODRs. This snapshot of ODR data may be helpful at district meetings to give a quick summary of ODRs.

  • If your school is applying for 2013-14 Illinois PBIS Recognition at the Gold or Platinum Level, Triangle Data is a required artifact for Outcome Data (non-SWIS users, other comparable documentation is acceptable). SWIS 5 currently does not offer the "Triangle Data Report", but you can follow directions on the Evaluation page to create the report using data exported via the Drill Down function in your school's SWIS account.

SWIS Facilitator Training

District Coaches and PBIS Administrators can become SWIS Facilitators for your district! SWIS Facilitators provide critical support and on-going assistance to school staff including editing SWIS Users' roles in school accounts. SWIS facilitators are the key to sustaining SWIS as a functional information system to influence how your school supports student behavior.

 

Save the dates for the upcoming SWIS Facilitator training on April 30-May 1, 2014, in Westmont, Illinois. Registration will be available soon on the SWISwebsite. This training will teach you: 

  • How to use SWIS,
  • How to train schools to use SWIS,
  • How to respond to the most frequently occurring questions,
  • How to help school teams use SWIS information for decision making, and
  • How to sustain SWIS use within each school you support.

Individual Student Information System (ISIS-SWIS) Facilitator Training

If you are a current SWIS Facilitator and are interested in becoming a certified ISIS-SWIS Facilitator, a one-day training will be held on Friday, May 2, 2014, in Westmont. Registration will soon be available here

Classroom Management

Effective classroom management includes a continuum of evidence-based strategies for responding to inappropriate behavior.  This range of options for dealing with challenging behavior should include the use of simple as well as more complex strategies.  Click here for a guide on using Differential Reinforcement in the classroom to increase appropriate behavior while decreasing inappropriate behavior.

The role of the school-based clinician is constantly evolving to meet the needs of youth, schools, families, and communities.Register now and join the School-Based Clinician Learning Community! This learning community will provide a place for networking, continuing dialogue, sharing successes, and strategizing together around data, systems, and practices for supporting our youth.

Coaching Focus

The January Coaches Meeting focused on informing stakeholders of the positive outcomes of PBIS implementation. One way to do this is through board reports. See Coaches Materials for example board reports from other PBIS districts.

Another document to share with stakeholders is the Impact of PBIS in Schools. This document lists the benefits of PBIS to students, schools, and communities and includes supporting research. It is a brief way to inform all stakeholders.

Tier 2/Tier 3 Coaching Blended Triangle
As interventions on the continuum of supports increase with intensity, the individualization also increases.  The processes of Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIP) guide teams in hypothesizing the function of a student's behavior and identifying function based strategies to develop a comprehensive behavior plan to support the student.  See the January Coaches Network Meeting materials to review key components of FBA/BIP as well as systems structures to add FBA/BIP to your school's continuum of supports.
 
The January 2014 Update Newsletter highlights the impact of Tier 3 interventions on students with disabilities. Check out the impact these interventions could have for students in your district! 
children circleSchool Family Community Partnerships (SFCP)

 

Family/Community Network Meetings can help districts increase family and community membership on school and district teams.  These meetings also provide an opportunity for neighboring coaches and administrators to learn how other districts are engaging family and community partners, and the valuable voice they bring to the table.  Spring meetings are currently being planned, but consider joining the next one scheduled in the Southern Region onFebruary 6, 2014, in Raymond, Illinois. Visit the Network Meetings page on the Partnerships tab for details. District-based coaches should contact Technical Assistance Coordinators to find out how to host one in their own district this Spring!

 
Save the Date!
Many communities are working in different ways to embed Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports into all areas of their communities, such as library, community center, Chamber of Commerce, local government community liaison, mental health agency partners, etcA new Forum on the Community Integration of PBIS will bring together those who are interested or have already started this important work. Watch for further details on the PBIS website in February. Mark your calendars for March 21, 2014when we will come together at Northern Illinois University Naperville campus.

The next High School Virtual Chat will be held February 24, 2014, from 1:00-2:30pm. The topic will be "Thinking Outside of the Box" and you can register here.
 
The High School Tier 2 Training Series begins on February 7, 2014. The series will help schools to develop capacity for effective and efficient Secondary Level supports for students. Schools will establish a Secondary Systems Planning Team to assist in the creation of a seamless system of support from Tier 1/Universal to Tier 2/Secondary.  The Secondary Systems Team will learn how to use universal data to target groups of students in need of Secondary Levels of support. Click here for more information and click here for registration.
Administrator Tip of the Month

Board reports are an excellent way to increase the visibility of PBIS in your district and to celebrate schools' success. You can find information on creating board reports and one district's example here

 

Listed below are specific action steps that administrators can take to support the implementation of PBIS:

  • Weekly loudspeaker SWPBIS announcements for staff that include:
    • Staff "kudos" for a job well done
    • Regular SWPBIS meeting reminders
  • Begin every staff meeting with pre-written SWPBIS updates from the team
  • Share pre-organized positive data reports in the middle of each staff meeting
  • Distribute staff acknowledgements at the end of each staff meeting
