Positive Effects for Middle School Students

Tefft Middle School in SD U-46 has been implementing Tier 1 PBIS for three years and Tier 2/Tier 3 for two years.  By focusing on fidelity and addressing both academic and behavioral interventions, they have experienced positive student outcomes.  A comparison of office discipline referrals (ODRs) for the full two years of PBIS implementation shows a 29% decline in major ODRs from 2009-10 to 2010-11.  ODRs have also decreased during Aug.-Mar. of 2011-12, from 1,102 to 1,065, compared to the previous year.  The school also currently has 62 out of their 745 (8%) students supported through Check-in Check-out.  Since PBIS implementation, Tefft’s number of students meeting or exceeding state standards on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test (ISAT) has increased.  The school did not make Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) prior to PBIS implementation (2008-09) but did achieve AYP in 2009-10 and 2010-11.  In 2011, Tefft received the Illinois Academic Honor Roll Spotlight School Award for having 64% low-income enrollment and 90% of students meeting or exceeding state standards on the ISAT.
