System of Tier 2 Interventions Continue to Improve Student Success

Centennial High School in Champaign CUSD 4 began implementing Tier 2 PBIS in August 2011. The Tier 2 systems team defined and implemented three types of Tier 2 interventions, and began using the Tier 2/Tier 3 Tracking Tool to monitor success. By December 2011, 137 students accessed Tier 2 supports, representing 10% of the population with 88 students (64%) responding to the intervention.  Staff reported that the new Tier 2 system contributed to an overall improvement in school climate, with office discipline referrals (ODRs) for disrespect decreasing 24% from August through December of 2010, from the previous year’s averages.  To improve supports, in the second semester of FY12, Centennial added additional supports by collaborating with Community Elements, a local mental health agency. 

The mental health partner initiated a time-limited, instructional group intervention for youth who have experienced trauma. The school social worker co-facilitated the group intervention, thus building capacity for school-based personnel to provide this type of specialized intervention. The school-based team reviewed data and identified five youth in need of this intervention in FY12. This systems team, which includes the mental  health providers, is closely monitoring the progress of the students to ensure success. In FY12, five students went through the entire 14 week intervention. Early indicators of progress included a reduction in incidents of problem behavior for the five participating students. When comparing the 14 weeks prior to the intervention to the 14 weeks during the intervention, youth had reductions in ODRs, out of school suspensions (OSS), and in school suspensions (ISS).  See Figures 123 and 124  on the following page.
